Is a "lifetime warranty" on shingles actually worth anything?

I'm looking into replacing my roof soon, and the contractor keeps mentioning these shingles with a "lifetime warranty." Sounds great, but um...what exactly does that even mean? Lifetime of the shingles, lifetime of my house, or my lifetime (lol)? I've heard some horror stories about warranties not covering much when you actually need them. Anyone here have experience dealing with these warranties - are they legit or just marketing fluff?
