Had a similar situation after a hailstorm last spring—synthetic underlayment definitely saved me from a bigger headache. The shingles took a beating, but the sheathing stayed dry. Still, I’ve seen too many attics with mold just because folks thought new underlayment was enough. If you can see your breath up there in winter, you know you’ve got a venting problem, no matter what’s under the shingles.

You nailed it—synthetic underlayment’s a game changer for storms. But yeah, it’s wild how many folks forget about attic ventilation. I’ve seen brand new roofs with moldy rafters just because the airflow was ignored. Underlayment helps, but it’s only part of the puzzle.

Funny you mention attic ventilation—why is it always the thing folks skip? I’ve lost count of how many “brand new” roofs I’ve seen with soggy insulation or even mushrooms popping up in the rafters (not the good kind). Do you think most homeowners even know what proper airflow looks like up there? I’m curious if anyone’s had luck with those solar-powered vents or if they’re just another gimmick. Synthetic underlayment’s solid, but without ventilation, it’s like wearing a raincoat in a sauna...

I’ve wondered about those solar vents too. My neighbor put one in last summer and swears it dropped his attic temp by 10 degrees, but I’m not convinced it’s a magic fix. We added more soffit vents instead—cheaper and seems to help with the musty smell. Ventilation’s just one of those things folks forget until there’s a problem...

I’m with you on the “not a magic fix” thing. I looked into solar vents after a buddy raved about his, but I kept wondering—how much of that temp drop is just from better airflow in general? We’ve got a mix of ridge and soffit vents, and honestly, just clearing out the old insulation made a bigger difference than I expected. Ever notice how every house seems to need a slightly different combo? I guess there’s no one-size-fits-all for attic funk...
