Been doing some research lately since we're planning to redo our roof soon, and I'm kinda stuck between asphalt shingles and metal roofing. I know metal roofs are supposed to be better for fire safety, but honestly, I've always had asphalt shingles and never had any issues. Plus, metal roofs seem like they'd be noisy during rainstorms (I mean, I love a good rainstorm, but not sure I want it amplified like a drum solo on my roof, you know?).

But then again, we live near a wooded area, and wildfires have been popping up more frequently around here lately. So, fire safety is definitely something I'm thinking about more seriously now. I've read that metal roofs have a higher fire rating and can even help lower insurance premiums in some cases. But they're also pricier upfront, and I'm not sure if the extra cost is worth it in the long run.

On the other hand, asphalt shingles are cheaper and easier to install, and they come in tons of colors and styles. But their fire rating isn't as high, and I'm wondering if that's something I should be concerned about long-term.

Has anyone here gone through this decision recently or have experience with either type of roof? Curious to hear your thoughts—especially if you've dealt with fire safety concerns or insurance stuff related to roofing choices.

Metal roofs aren't actually as noisy as you'd think...especially if you've got decent insulation and attic space. And yeah, the fire rating can really help with insurance—seen it firsthand. But if budget's tight, asphalt shingles with a Class A fire rating might be a solid compromise.

Agreed. Went with Class A asphalt myself due to cost... insurance discount wasn't huge but noticeable. Metal would've been nice for durability, but honestly, noise was never my concern—hail dents were.

Went with metal myself and yeah, hail dents are definitely a thing—seen plenty of roofs looking like golf balls after a storm. But honestly, they're usually just cosmetic, rarely structural. The real advantage I've noticed with metal is longevity and lower maintenance over time. Still, Class A asphalt shingles are solid if budget's tight, especially since fire rating matters more and more these days. Good call overall.
