Would you worry about lightning if your house had a metal roof?

Funny you mention the green roof thing—I actually looked into that a while back when we were redoing ours. My understanding (after way too much Googling and a couple conversations with a local roofer who seemed more interested in my coffee than my questions) is that the soil and plants don’t really do much for lightning. The metal’s still the path of least resistance, so if you get hit, it’ll mostly just travel through the metal and down whatever grounding system you’ve got. The dirt might slow it a hair, but not enough to matter.

I hear you on the electricians, too. I had one guy tell me my ground rods were “overkill” and another say I needed twice as many. In the end, I just made sure everything was tight and up to code, then called it good. Like you said—checking connections is probably more for peace of mind than anything, but hey, sleep’s important.

Honestly, after seeing what hail did to my old asphalt roof (and how fast it caught in that one freak storm), I’ll take a few extra dings on metal over worrying about fire any day.

That lines up with what I found too—metal’s still the main conductor, no matter what you put on top. I did a lot of reading before we switched to metal, and honestly, the fire resistance was the clincher for me. Hail dents are annoying, but replacing scorched shingles every few years was way worse for the budget. I do think some folks go overboard with grounding, but as long as it’s up to code and connections are solid, that’s usually enough. Peace of mind counts for something, especially when storms roll through.

I get where you’re coming from on the fire resistance—same reason we bit the bullet and went metal after a few too many close calls with embers during wildfire season. I’ll take a few dings from hail over another insurance claim any day.

As for lightning, here’s how I’ve come to think about it after a lot of research (and a couple of nervous thunderstorms):
1. Metal roofs don’t actually make your house more likely to be struck. They just conduct better if it does happen.
2. The real trick is making sure you’ve got solid grounding. I know some folks in my neighborhood went all out with extra rods and cables, but our electrician said as long as it’s up to code, you’re good. We checked ours after install—tight connections, no corrosion, everything bonded properly.
3. If you’re in an area that gets hammered by storms, it might be worth double-checking your surge protection inside too. We had a surge fry our garage door opener once... lesson learned.

One thing I will say—metal roofs are LOUDER in the rain than shingles. Some people love that sound, but if you’re a light sleeper, maybe budget for some extra insulation under there.

Honestly, I’d worry more about wind-driven leaks or snow sliding off than lightning itself. The peace of mind from not stressing about fire is worth it for us.

If anyone’s curious, ours is standing seam steel with a pretty steep pitch (midwest snow country), and so far it’s held up way better than the old asphalt ever did. Only regret? Not doing it sooner, dents and all.

That’s the common wisdom, but I gotta admit, I’m still a little twitchy about lightning and metal roofs, especially after what happened to my uncle’s cabin last summer. The place is way out in the sticks—lots of tall pines, not many neighbors. Got hit during a freak storm, and while the metal roof definitely helped channel the strike safely to ground (no fire, thank goodness), it still fried half his electronics. Surge protectors only did so much.

Maybe it’s just me being paranoid, but I’m not totally convinced that “up to code” grounding is always enough in rural areas with poor soil conductivity. Our local inspector said rocky ground can make grounding rods less effective, so he actually recommends going above code if you’re out in the boonies. We went with extra rods and a ground ring after hearing his horror stories.

About rain noise—funny you mention that. My buddy swore the sound would be “soothing white noise,” but after one hailstorm he was ready to sleep in his truck. Ended up retrofitting with some fancy foam panels under the roof deck—not cheap, but it helped a ton.

I do agree on snow slides being a bigger issue than lightning for some folks. Up here near Lake Erie, we see those mini-avalanches every winter. If you’ve got walkways or driveways below steep metal panels, snow guards are almost mandatory unless you want to risk getting clocked by an ice sheet on your way out for coffee.

All things considered, I’d still pick metal for fire safety too... but I wouldn’t brush off lightning protection as “good enough” without thinking about your specific site and soil conditions first. Sometimes code is just the starting line, not the finish.

That’s a good way to put it. I get why you’re cautious—rural sites are a different beast, especially with rocky soil. Going above code makes sense if you can swing it. Better safe than sorry when storms roll in.
