Flat roofs and heavy rain: is it a disaster waiting to happen?

That’s a fair point—maintenance is huge. I’ve seen plenty of flat roofs with all the right drains, but if nobody’s up there after a storm or in the fall, it doesn’t matter much. Curious, though: has anyone here actually set up a regular schedule for checking drains and scuppers? I find most folks just wait until there’s a problem... but maybe I’m wrong. Also, does anyone use leaf guards or mesh screens on their roof drains? Wondering if those actually help or just get clogged themselves.

I tried to get on a schedule—put reminders in my phone and everything. But honestly, I end up just checking after big storms or when the leaves start piling up. As for mesh screens, they’re a double-edged sword. They catch the big stuff, but if you’ve got a lot of pine needles or tiny debris, they can clog up just as fast. I’d say they help, but only if you’re willing to clean them out too... kind of like trading one chore for another.

- Just bought my place last year and the flat roof was one of those things I didn’t really think about until the first big rain.
- I tried to set a calendar reminder for checking the drains, but honestly, I forget unless I see water pooling or a bunch of leaves up there.
- Mesh screens sounded like a good idea at first, but I’ve got a ton of maple seeds and they just get stuck in the mesh. Ended up having to clean the screens more than the drains themselves... kind of annoying.
- What’s worked for me (so far) is just doing a quick check every couple weeks in the fall, and after any heavy rain. Not perfect, but better than nothing.
- I do worry about missing something and ending up with a leak, but I guess that’s just part of owning a flat roof? Still learning as I go.
- If anyone has a trick for remembering to check without feeling like it’s another chore, I’m all ears.

- Been there with the mesh screens—

“they just get stuck in the mesh. Ended up having to clean the screens more than the drains themselves...”
—same deal at my place. Maple seeds are relentless.
- I just tie checking the roof to something else I already do, like taking out the trash on Sundays. If I’m already outside, I’ll just pop up and take a look.
- Honestly, I’ve missed a check or two and nothing’s blown up yet, but I get the worry. Flat roofs are just higher maintenance, no way around it.
- One thing that helped me: I keep a broom and a bucket right by the back door. Makes it less of a hassle when I remember.

Mesh screens are a pain, honestly—sometimes I think they just make things worse with all the gunk that piles up. I’ve started tracking roof checks on my maintenance app, but even then, stuff gets missed. Has anyone tried those wide-mouth drain covers? Wondering if they’re less hassle than mesh.
