telling apart fresh leaks from old ones is driving me nuts

Green roofs sound awesome, but my wallet would probably have a heart attack, lol. Honestly, I've found the touch test pretty reliable—fresh leaks feel damp and cool to the touch, while old stains just feel like regular drywall. Had a leak last year and spent way too long staring at the ceiling trying to figure it out...ended up just poking it gently with a screwdriver. Not exactly high-tech, but hey, it worked.

Yeah, upfront costs can sting a bit, but honestly, green roofs aren't always as pricey as people think. I DIY'd mine a couple years back—nothing fancy, just some hardy sedums and basic drainage layers. Took a weekend and a few YouTube tutorials. Haven't had a leak since, plus it keeps the attic way cooler in summer. Beats poking ceilings with screwdrivers every rainy season...

That's pretty impressive, especially for a DIY job. Did you have to reinforce your roof structure at all before putting everything up there? I've seen some roofs sagging under the extra weight after a few years, even with lighter plants like sedums. Always wondered how much prep work is really necessary...

That's really encouraging to hear your DIY roof garden worked out so well. I've been tempted to try something similar, but the structural concerns always hold me back. My neighbor did a green roof a few years ago without extra bracing and ended up with some noticeable sagging after heavy rains. Did you use any special drainage setup or waterproofing layers to keep moisture weight down? Curious how much difference that makes in the long run...

Drainage and waterproofing are definitely critical factors—probably even more than structural reinforcement in some cases. I've seen a few DIY setups that skipped proper drainage layers, and they ended up with pooling water, which adds a ton of unnecessary weight. A good drainage mat or layer of lightweight aggregate (like expanded clay or perlite) can significantly reduce moisture retention and overall load.

Personally, I'd never recommend skipping waterproof membranes either. Even minor leaks can cause hidden structural damage over time, and distinguishing fresh leaks from old ones (as your thread title suggests) can become a real headache. A solid waterproofing membrane—something like EPDM or PVC—isn't cheap, but it's worth the investment for peace of mind.

Your neighbor's sagging issue might've been partly due to inadequate drainage rather than just structural bracing. Proper drainage and waterproofing won't eliminate the need for structural checks, but they definitely help manage moisture weight and prolong roof integrity.
