Battling winter roof woes: heat cables vs. more insulation?

I bit the bullet on attic insulation last year. Not cheap, but now the furnace isn’t running nonstop and no more weird cold drafts.

That lines up with my experience—insulation made a bigger dent in my heating bills than heat cables ever did. Did you notice any change in ice damming after adding insulation? I still get some along the gutters, but way less than before. Green roof is tempting, but yeah, with our snow load and freeze-thaw cycles, it feels like asking for trouble...

Insulation definitely helped with my heating bills, but I’ve still got a few stubborn ice dams, especially on the north side. Honestly, I think some of it comes down to roof design—my place has a bunch of weird valleys and overhangs that just love to collect snow. I tried heat cables one year and they worked okay, but the electric bill was a bit of a shock. Anyone else notice that? I’m not convinced there’s a perfect fix, unless you want to stand on your roof with a shovel all winter... which I do not recommend.

Yeah, those weird roof angles are a pain. I’ve got a similar setup—lots of valleys and overhangs, and the ice just piles up no matter what I do. Heat cables helped a bit but the spike in my electric bill made me rethink it fast. Honestly, I think some roofs just aren’t ever going to be totally ice-dam free unless you want to drop serious cash on redesigning things... which isn’t happening here. You’re not alone with this one.

I hear you on the heat cables—mine barely made a dent, and the bill was a nasty surprise. I’ve wondered if adding more insulation in the attic would help, but with all those weird corners and dormers, I’m not convinced it’d make much difference. Has anyone actually seen a big improvement from beefing up insulation, or is it just another money pit?

I’ve managed a few older houses with funky attic layouts—lots of nooks, dormers, you name it. Honestly, adding insulation did help, but it wasn’t a miracle fix. The trick was focusing on the spots where warm air sneaks out, like around vents and those awkward corners. We used blown-in insulation for the weird spaces, which worked better than batts. It cut down on ice dams and the heating bill dropped a bit, but it wasn’t dramatic. Still, it felt less like throwing money away than running heat cables nonstop... those things are power hogs.
