Battling winter roof woes: heat cables vs. more insulation?

That “unicorn scenario” made me laugh - if it exists, I’ve never seen it, and I’ve been at this a while. I had an old Colonial with a low-pitch roof and all the insulation in the world, but those ice dams still showed up right above the bay window every February. Heat cables kept things in check, but yeah, the electric bill stung. Has anyone looked into those heated gutter guards? I’m skeptical they’d do much with all the weird angles and valleys, but I’m curious if they’re any better than the standard cables or just another gadget collecting dust.

Heated gutter guards caught my eye last year when I was knee-deep in slush, but I chickened out after reading mixed reviews. My neighbor swears by them, but his roof is a simple A-frame - mine’s got more twists and turns than a soap opera. I feel like the heat cables are ugly but at least you know what you’re getting. The guards seem like they’d just move the ice further down the line, but maybe I’m just jaded after too many Februarys on a ladder.
