Anyone else tried those heated driveway mats?

I hear you on the sticker shock. I tried a couple of those mats for our front steps after my wife slipped last year, and even just running them a few hours at a time, I noticed the bill creeping up. For a full walkway, I’d probably stick to clearing by hand unless there’s a real safety issue. The timer idea is smart though—wish I’d thought of that before plugging them in whenever it snowed. Honestly, nothing’s as satisfying as getting out there with the shovel after a big storm, even if my back disagrees...

Funny you mention that—my back’s been protesting louder every winter, but I still end up shoveling most days. I tried those mats on our porch last year and yeah, the electric bill was a surprise. Did you notice if they actually melted everything evenly? Mine left some icy patches near the edges, which made me wonder if I was just trading one hazard for another.

I had the same issue with uneven melting, especially around the edges and where the mat didn’t quite reach the steps. Honestly, I started wondering if it was worth the extra cost, since I still had to go out and chip away at those stubborn spots. Did you try overlapping the mats or anything like that? I thought about it, but then the price just kept creeping up. For now, I’m back to using a mix of sand and a good old shovel—cheaper, if not easier on the back.

That’s pretty much where I landed too. I thought heated mats would be my ticket to a snow-free driveway, but apparently, they don’t cover the “awkward corners” package. Tried overlapping them once—looked like a patchwork quilt, and my wallet definitely noticed. At this point, it’s me vs. the ice, and the ice is winning... but at least I’m getting a workout?

Honestly, I tried the heated mats last winter thinking I’d finally outsmart the ice. Didn’t quite go as planned—my driveway’s got a weird angle near the garage, and those mats just don’t flex or overlap well. Ended up with bare spots and some serious slush puddles. Not to mention, my electric bill jumped way more than I expected. Still, I guess shoveling keeps my shoulders in shape... even if my technique could use some work.
