is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?

Yeah, installation definitely matters, but honestly, the materials these days aren't always what they used to be either. My parents' house had shingles from the 80s that lasted almost 30 years without issues. Meanwhile, my neighbor replaced his roof five years ago, and it's already curling at the edges. Sure, maybe the installer wasn't perfect, but still... makes you wonder if quality standards have slipped a bit lately.

I've noticed something similar since buying my first place. Did some digging into this, and it seems like manufacturers have shifted materials a bit to cut costs or meet environmental standards. Not necessarily a bad thing overall, but it can affect durability. Also, proper attic ventilation and insulation play a huge role—poor airflow can cause shingles to curl prematurely. Might be worth checking out your neighbor's attic setup... could be more than just material quality at play here.

Same here, noticed the shingles on my place curling up way sooner than expected. Did a bit of troubleshooting myself—first checked attic insulation levels (mine were pretty thin), then made sure soffit vents weren't blocked by insulation or debris. After beefing up the insulation and clearing vents, airflow improved noticeably and the roof seems happier now... fingers crossed it stays that way. Might be worth a quick peek in your attic before blaming the shingles entirely.

Honestly, I get your point about attic ventilation and insulation, but let's not let shingle manufacturers off the hook entirely. I've seen roofs from 20-30 years ago still holding up better than some newer ones today. Sure, proper airflow helps a ton—no argument there—but it feels like quality control on shingles has slipped a bit lately. Maybe it's cost-cutting or environmental regs changing materials... who knows. Either way, checking the attic is smart advice, but I'm still skeptical about modern shingles lasting as long as advertised.

You're definitely onto something there. Feels like shingles these days are kinda like appliances—built to last just long enough for the warranty to expire, haha. But yeah, attic checks never hurt... at least that's something we can control ourselves.
