is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?

You're spot-on about ventilation, but honestly, I think material quality plays a bigger role than weather lately. I've seen newer shingles cracking way sooner than older roofs didβ€”manufacturers seem to be cutting corners these days...

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Makes me wonder if it's just shingles or if other roofing materials like metal or tiles are also seeing a drop in quality lately... anyone had experience with those recently?

I've been wondering about metal roofs myself lately. Had one installed on a property about 8 years ago, and it's held up pretty well so farβ€”no leaks or major issues yetβ€”but I've heard some folks mention newer metal panels seem thinner and dent more easily than before. Makes me think manufacturers might be cutting corners across the board.

Maybe it's worth checking the gauge thickness carefully before buying... anyone else noticing thinner metal roofing lately?

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Seems like gauge thickness is definitely dropping a bit lately... probably manufacturers trying to save costs. Still, even thinner metal roofs usually outperform asphalt shingles long-term, especially if installed properly. Worth double-checking specs though.

I've been noticing similar things since we bought our first home last year. Did a ton of research beforehand, and you're rightβ€”metal roofs generally hold up better even if they're thinner. One thing I found helpful was looking closely at the coating specs and warranty details. Sometimes manufacturers skimp there too, not just on gauge thickness. But yeah, properly installed metal still seems like a solid bet long-term... good call on double-checking those specs.
