is it just me or are roofs wearing out faster these days?

Could be, but sometimes it's not just the shingles themselves. I've inspected houses where curling happens early because of ventilation issues or improper installation—like nails driven too deep or unevenly spaced. Have you checked your neighbor's attic ventilation? Metal roofing can be a solid option, though I've seen some cases where noise during heavy rain bothers people...depends on your tolerance level, I guess. Anyone here had metal roofs long-term without issues?

I've had metal roofing for about 12 years now, and honestly, it's been pretty solid. When we first switched, I was worried about the noise during storms too, but it hasn't been as bad as people warned me about. Yeah, you hear the rain a bit more clearly, but it's actually kinda relaxing—at least for me.

But you're right about installation being key. My neighbor went metal around the same time we did and had nothing but headaches because his contractor rushed the job. He ended up with leaks around vents and skylights within a couple of years. Meanwhile, ours has held up great through snowstorms and heavy winds without any issues.

I also agree ventilation is underrated. Before we switched to metal, our shingles curled badly after only 8 years because the attic wasn't venting properly. Once we fixed that issue and put on the metal roof, things have been smooth sailing ever since.

I've noticed the same thing about shingles wearing out faster lately. We replaced ours about 7 years ago, and they're already looking pretty rough around the edges. I thought maybe we just got unlucky with a bad batch or something, but now I'm wondering if ventilation might be our issue too. Might have to check that out before we consider metal—though hearing rain clearly sounds kinda nice, actually...

Same here, our shingles are barely hitting the 6-year mark and already look like they've been through a midlife crisis. I thought maybe it was just cheap materials, but now I'm thinking ventilation might be our culprit too. A buddy of mine switched to metal last year—he loves the rain sound, but says hailstorms sound like a drum solo at 3am. Might wanna keep that in mind...

Honestly, you're onto something with ventilation. A lot of people overlook it, but poor attic airflow can really speed up shingle deterioration—especially if moisture gets trapped up there. I used to think metal roofs were the ultimate solution too, until a friend mentioned the hailstorm noise issue. Drum solos at 3am...no thanks.

Have you ever considered green roofing? I know it sounds a bit out there, but hear me out: a properly installed green roof (think plants and soil layers) can double or even triple your roof's lifespan. Plus, it naturally regulates temperature and moisture, which means less stress on the materials underneath. I've seen some setups lasting over 30 years without major issues. Sure, there's some upfront cost and maintenance involved, but long-term it might save you headaches—and it's pretty cool environmentally speaking. Just something to chew on if you're tired of replacing shingles every few years.
