I've been working on a little DIY project lately—building a custom rack for my bike storage in the garage. Thought it'd be a quick weekend thing, but um...turns out there's way more to consider than I expected, haha. Anyway, I started researching materials and now I'm stuck between going with steel or aluminum. I've read all the usual stuff about strength vs weight, corrosion resistance, blah blah blah...but what really surprised me was how much difference there seems to be between brands.
I mean, I figured metal is metal, right? But apparently not. A buddy of mine swears by one particular aluminum brand (he's a bit obsessed honestly), says it's lighter and easier to work with. But another friend insists that steel from certain manufacturers is way better quality and worth the extra weight because it'll last forever. Honestly, I'm kinda lost at this point.
Has anyone else run into something similar? Like, have you noticed big differences between different brands when it comes to working with steel or aluminum? Or is it mostly marketing hype? I'm leaning toward aluminum just because it's lighter and easier for me to handle solo, but I don't wanna regret it later if it turns out to be flimsy or something. Would appreciate hearing some real-world experiences before I spend any money...
