"Usually when they're discounted as surplus, warranty's either shortened or gone altogether—at least that's been my experience."

Yeah, spot on there. Honestly, I'd be pretty skeptical about getting any meaningful warranty coverage on surplus sheets. Suppliers usually discount these things precisely because they're trying to clear inventory without the usual strings attached. I once asked about warranty on some surplus panels and the guy just laughed—nicely, but still... laughed. You might squeeze a short-term guarantee outta them if you're persuasive enough, but don't hold your breath.

Yeah, warranties on surplus stuff can be pretty hit-or-miss. Couple years back, I picked up some surplus metal sheets for a shed project. Asked about warranty coverage, and the guy just shrugged and said something like, "Warranty? You're lucky these aren't rusty yet." They turned out fine, but honestly, if you're going surplus, just inspect carefully and accept you're probably on your own if anything goes sideways.

Good points there—surplus can definitely be a gamble. Couple quick thoughts from my experience:

- Local metal roofing suppliers sometimes have discounted "seconds" or slightly blemished sheets. Usually decent quality, just cosmetic flaws.
- Have you checked out any local auctions or estate sales? I've snagged some surprisingly good roofing materials that way.
- Curious if anyone's had luck with online surplus dealers? I've browsed a few sites but haven't pulled the trigger yet...

I've had decent luck with online surplus dealers, actually. Got some sheets last summer—minor scratches but nothing serious. Shipping was a bit steep though... anyone found ways around high shipping costs for bulky stuff like roofing?

Yeah, shipping costs can really sneak up on you, especially with something as bulky as roofing sheets. I remember when I first bought my house, I thought I'd save a ton by ordering materials online. Found a great deal on some metal roofing panels—looked perfect in the pictures, price was right, and I was feeling pretty proud of myself. Then came checkout... and the shipping cost nearly doubled the total. Talk about sticker shock.

Ended up canceling that order and checking out local options instead. Surprisingly, a small local lumberyard had some decent metal sheets in stock. They weren't surplus or anything fancy, but they were solid quality and priced reasonably enough that it balanced out once I factored in zero shipping fees. Plus, being able to inspect them in person before buying was reassuring—no surprises with scratches or dents.

I get the appeal of surplus dealers online though; sometimes those deals are too good to pass up even with shipping. Maybe if you can find one that's within driving distance, renting a trailer or borrowing a friend's truck could offset the cost? I've done that before with furniture and appliances—bit of hassle but saved me quite a bit overall.

Anyway, sounds like you're already doing pretty well navigating this stuff. Good luck with your project!
