"they were super careful about moisture control and stacking methods. Four years later, zero rust..."

Yeah, storage definitely matters. I've inspected roofs where sheets from general hardware stores rusted surprisingly fast. Specialized suppliers usually know what they're doing—worth the extra cost in my experience.

I see your point, and specialized suppliers do often have better quality control. But honestly, I've had some great outcomes even with sheets from general hardware stores, provided the installation and maintenance practices are spot-on. For instance, I worked on a green roof project a few years back where we sourced metal sheets locally from a regular hardware outlet. We made sure to apply a protective coating ourselves and paid extra attention to drainage and ventilation. It's been about five years now, and there's barely any rust visible at all...

I'm not saying specialized suppliers aren't worth it—they certainly can be—but with thorough prep and careful installation, you can still achieve excellent durability without necessarily paying premium prices. Sometimes it's more about the approach than the source.

Good points all around. As a first-time homeowner who just went through this, here's my quick take:

- Specialized suppliers do offer peace of mind, especially if you're new to DIY.
- But I totally agree with this:

"Sometimes it's more about the approach than the source."

- I went with hardware store sheets myself, did plenty of YouTube research (lol), and took extra care sealing edges and fasteners.
- So far, so good... fingers crossed it stays that way!

Yeah, totally agree with this. I've seen high-end sheets from specialized suppliers fail prematurely just because someone rushed the install or skipped proper sealing. On the flip side, my uncle put up basic hardware store metal sheets on his shed like 8 years ago—nothing fancy, just careful prep and sealing—and they're still holding strong. Good prep and attention to detail usually beats brand names in my experience...

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing. When I first started learning roofing, I helped a buddy redo his garage roof. He insisted on buying these premium sheets from a specialty place, thinking they'd last forever. But he rushed the flashing and didn't seal the overlaps properly—within two years, leaks everywhere. Meanwhile, my dad's old barn roof is still solid after 15 years with basic sheets from the local lumber yard. Proper installation really makes all the difference...
