Totally agree with your point about smaller contractors often being more detail-oriented. When we redid our attic insulation, the big companies just threw around generic terms like "energy efficient," but didn't really dive into specifics. The smaller guy we hired actually explained R-values, airflow dynamics, and even pointed out a couple spots where improper venting had caused condensation issues. Sometimes going local means you get someone who actually cares enough to educate you...and that can save you a lot down the road.

That's a great point about smaller contractors taking the time to educate homeowners. But how do you balance that personalized attention with verifying their actual qualifications? I've seen smaller outfits that are super knowledgeable but lack proper licensing or insurance coverage, which can become a headache if something goes wrong. Curious if anyone's run into issues with this...or found a good way to vet smaller contractors without losing that personal touch.

Yeah, that's definitely a tricky balance. I've inspected homes where the work was top-notch, but when I asked about permits or insurance... crickets. Usually, I casually ask contractors for references and proof of insurance upfrontβ€”most legit ones won't mind at all. It's saved me from a few headaches down the road.

That's a solid point about checking insurance upfront; I've encountered similar scenarios. Even with green roofing projects, where specialized knowledge is crucial, some smaller contractors deliver exceptional work but skip the formalities like permits and proper coverage. It makes me wonderβ€”how do you folks typically handle situations where a contractor checks all technical boxes but hesitates on providing full documentation? Curious if anyone has navigated this successfully...

Yeah, been there myself. Had a guy redo my shed roofβ€”amazing craftsmanship, knew his stuff inside out, but when I asked about permits and insurance, he just shrugged and said, "Trust me, it'll be fine." Famous last words, right? Ended up biting the bullet and insisting on paperwork. Felt awkward at first, but honestly, peace of mind beats awkwardness every time...
