I'm finally tackling the attic this year—it's been a long time coming, trust me. Right now, it's basically a sauna in summer and an icebox in winter. Not exactly ideal for storage or anything else, really. Anyway, I've been doing some digging around online (probably too much, honestly) and I'm stuck between two different approaches.
Option one is to go heavy on insulation—seal everything up tight, thick layers of insulation everywhere, make it super cozy and energy-efficient. Seems like a no-brainer at first glance, right? But then I read some horror stories about moisture buildup and mold because there's not enough airflow. Yikes.
Option two is to prioritize ventilation—installing vents, fans, maybe even one of those fancy attic exhaust systems. Keeps the air moving and prevents moisture issues, but then I'm worried I'll lose heat in winter and cool air in summer. Kind of defeats the purpose of insulating in the first place, doesn't it?
I mean, ideally I'd do both perfectly, but budget-wise that's not happening right now. So I'm wondering if anyone's had experience leaning more towards one or the other? Like, did you go all-in on insulation and regret it later because of humidity issues? Or did you prioritize ventilation and end up with drafts and higher energy bills?
Honestly, I'm leaning slightly towards better ventilation because mold freaks me out more than a slightly higher heating bill. But maybe I'm overthinking it (wouldn't be the first time, lol). Curious what route others took and how it turned out for you.
