Rainwater pooling in the backyard - what actually works?

I get the appeal of those plastic yard drains - easy to install, relatively cheap, and they seem like a quick fix. But honestly, I’ve seen just as many problems as solutions with them. The pitch issue you mentioned is a big one, but even when they’re installed “right,” they’re still prone to clogging and shifting over time. I’ve inspected yards where the drain was technically working, but the surrounding soil had settled or washed out, so water just pooled somewhere else.

I’m actually a bigger fan of French drains or even a simple swale if you’ve got the space. They’re a bit more work up front, but they handle volume better and don’t get jammed up with tennis balls or dog hair as easily. Plus, you can disguise them with gravel or landscaping so they don’t stick out like a sore thumb. Not saying plastic drains are useless, but in my experience, they’re more of a band-aid than a real fix for chronic drainage issues. Sometimes it’s worth biting the bullet and doing it once, properly, instead of patching things up every rainy season.
