That’s pretty much been my experience too—every “fix” seems to just move the water problem somewhere else or keep me digging up the yard. I tried those pavers a couple years back, thinking it’d be a quick win, but like you said, the water just pooled underneath and made a muddy mess. Ended up pulling half of them back out.
Extending the downspouts was probably the only thing that made a noticeable difference for me, and it didn’t cost much. I used those black corrugated pipes too—honestly, they’re not pretty, but they do the job. I keep meaning to bury them, but then it rains again and I’m back to square one.
I’ve also mixed in sand and compost, but with heavy clay, it’s like fighting a losing battle. The soil just kind of laughs at you. Sometimes I wonder if the folks selling all these “drainage solutions” ever had to deal with actual backyard clay... Anyway, glad I’m not the only one who’s skeptical about the miracle fixes.
Those black corrugated pipes are lifesavers, even if they’re not winning any style contests. I ended up sinking mine just below the surface and tossing a bit of mulch over them—out of sight, mostly. One thing that helped a bit for me was digging a shallow swale to guide water away from the worst spots. It’s not fancy, but it does direct the runoff to a spot where it can soak in better. Clay is stubborn, though... I’ve given up on trying to amend the whole yard. Targeting the problem areas seems less frustrating (and cheaper) in the long run.

You’re not wrong—clay’s like concrete when it’s dry and a swamp when it’s wet. Swales and pipes are solid moves. French drains can help too, but honestly, unless you want to rent a mini-excavator and go full landscape overhaul, just focusing on the worst spots makes way more sense. I’ve seen people spend thousands trying to “fix” clay soil everywhere and end up right back where they started after a big storm. Sometimes good enough really is good enough.
I keep hearing about French drains, but I’m not totally convinced they’d work in my yard. The clay here is so dense, I feel like water just sits on top no matter what. Has anyone tried just adding a ton of mulch or gravel to the worst spots instead of digging up everything? I’m tempted to try that first, but not sure if it’s just a band-aid.
