How do you keep your gutters from turning into leaf soup?

That “seasonal workout” line hits home—climbing up there with a bucket feels like my unofficial autumn tradition. I’ve tried a few of those “miracle” gutter guards too, but honestly, nothing’s ever really stood up to the combo of maple helicopters and moss we get here in the PNW. One thing that helped a bit was adjusting the downspout angle and adding splash blocks, but it’s still mostly about regular checks. The green roof section over my garage actually slows down runoff, which weirdly makes the gutters less chaotic, but then I’m dealing with moss in new places. Trade-offs everywhere, I guess.

That’s a familiar story—every “fix” seems to just move the problem around. I’m in the same boat with gutter guards; they just turn into a moss-and-maple helicopter mat for me. Have you ever tried those mesh inserts that sit inside the gutter instead of over it? They’re not perfect, but a bit cheaper and easier to pull out and hose off. I keep wondering if there’s a low-cost way to slow down the moss, short of pressure washing every spring. Maybe it’s just one of those things we have to budget time for, living here.

Mesh inserts are a mixed bag for me—they’re easier to clean, sure, but I’ve seen them clog up fast in spots with heavy tree cover. Have you ever tried copper strips on the roof edge? They’re supposed to help with moss, though results seem hit or miss.

- Totally get what you mean about mesh inserts. I put them in last fall—super easy to pop out and rinse, but yeah, they still get jammed up under my big maple.
- Tried copper strips a couple years back. They did slow down the moss, but didn’t stop it completely. Maybe it depends on how much shade you’ve got?
- Honestly, I’m still scooping out “leaf soup” every spring... but at least the mesh keeps out the bigger stuff.
- If you find something that actually works 100%, let us know—seems like everyone’s got a different trick!

That’s basically my spring workout routine—hauling out buckets of soggy leaves and whatever mystery sludge has brewed over winter. Tried those foam gutter inserts once because they were on sale, but they just turned into a moss farm. My neighbor swears by his “gutter cleaning robot,” but I’m not dropping $200 for a gadget that’ll probably get stuck on the first acorn. At this point, I just budget for a pizza and bribe my teenager to help. Not perfect, but at least it’s cheaper than new gutters.
