How do you keep your gutters from turning into leaf soup?

Those plastic guards are more trouble than they're worth, in my experience. I actually had a tenant complain last year when the guards just trapped pine needles and made things worse—ended up with water pouring over the edge. The leaf blower trick works okay if you stay on top of it, but what about those spots where stuff just compacts? I’ve tried those wire downspout strainers, but they seem to clog even faster. Is there really any setup that doesn’t need a ton of maintenance, or is that just wishful thinking...?

I hear you on the plastic guards—those things can turn a gutter into a pine needle terrarium in no time. But I’ve actually had better luck with the micro-mesh metal covers, especially in areas with a lot of small debris. They’re pricier up front, but they don’t warp or sag like plastic, and the holes are tiny enough to keep most stuff out. Still, nothing’s truly maintenance-free... unless you count hiring someone else to climb the ladder twice a year. Even then, you’re just outsourcing the headache.

You nailed it—no matter what guard you pick, there’s always some gunk that finds its way in. I’ve seen folks swear by micro-mesh too, but in heavy rain, sometimes those fine holes get clogged and water just sheets right over the edge. Personally, I lean toward the heavier-duty metal covers, but I still end up clearing out corners where stuff piles up. At least with metal, you’re not dealing with cracked plastic every couple of years... but yeah, it’s always some kind of trade-off.

Metal covers have held up the best for me too, especially with all the maple helicopters around here. Still, you’re right—corners are always the trouble spot. What I’ve found helps is running a hose through after storms to flush out the junk before it dries out and gets stuck. Anyone tried those foam inserts? I’ve seen mixed reviews, but never actually installed them myself... Curious if they’re more hassle than they’re worth.

- Foam inserts... honestly, I’ve seen them clog up faster than screens, especially with seeds and pine needles. They’re a pain to clean once they get packed in there.
- Metal covers work better for me, but I still end up on a ladder every fall—corners just collect everything, like you said.
- Hose trick helps, but sometimes the downspouts get blocked way down where you can’t see. Ever had to snake one out? That’s a whole project.
- Anyone actually found something that keeps those maple seeds out for good, or is it just wishful thinking?
