How do you keep your gutters from turning into leaf soup?

- Honestly, I’ve seen foam inserts work fine in some spots—depends on tree type and roof pitch.
- Mesh guards clog less, but pine needles still sneak through.
- Hand-scooping’s a pain, but if you do it twice a year, it’s not awful.
- For bigger properties, we switched to solid covers—pricey upfront, but less hassle long-term.
- Still gotta check downspouts though... learned that the hard way after a backup last spring.

I get the appeal of solid covers, but honestly, I had them on my last place and they didn’t play nice with heavy rain. Water would just shoot right over the edge sometimes—guess it depends on your roof pitch and how much rain you get.

I’m with you there. I just throw on some gloves and make a morning of it in the fall. Not fun, but at least I know what’s going on up there. Mesh guards were a nightmare for me with all the maple seeds around here... those little helicopters jammed everything up.

I hear you on the mesh guards—maple seeds are relentless. I’ve seen folks spend more time picking those out than just cleaning the gutters outright. Solid covers can be hit or miss, too. On a steep roof, water just skips right off, especially in a downpour. I’ve had better luck with the micro-mesh style, but only on houses without a ton of tree debris. Honestly, sometimes old-school hand cleaning is just less hassle, even if it’s a pain.

Funny you mention that—last fall I tried those foam inserts thinking I’d finally outsmart the leaves. Ended up with a gutter full of soggy mulch and a family of wasps. I’ve got a big old silver maple right over the house, so I’m out there twice a season, ladder and gloves, cursing the whole time. Micro-mesh worked okay on the back side (less tree cover), but up front? Forget it. Sometimes the “pain” is just the price of living under trees, I guess.

That’s the worst—foam inserts are basically wasp condos in my experience.
- Micro-mesh is decent, but like you said, heavy tree cover just overwhelms it.
- I tell folks: if you’ve got a big maple, hand-cleaning twice a year is just part of the deal.
- At least you get a good arm workout... silver lining?
