Metal mesh is decent for needles, but yeah, hail can definitely ding them up—especially the thinner aluminum stuff. I’ve seen some get warped enough that debris sneaks in around the edges. If you’re in a hail-prone area, heavier gauge steel holds up better, but it’s pricier. Honestly, nothing’s totally maintenance-free... I still tell folks to check for clogs once or twice a season, no matter what guard they use. Some roofs just make it trickier than others.

Yeah, I’ve noticed thinner mesh gets bent up pretty easily after a decent hailstorm—had to swap out a few sections last year. I went with stainless mesh this time, which cost more, but so far it’s holding up better. Still have to get up there to clear out the maple seeds every fall, though... Roof pitch makes it a pain in the neck, especially with the two-story section. Maintenance just never really ends.

Stainless mesh is definitely a step up—I've seen way too many folks go cheap and regret it after the first big storm. I hear you on the maple seeds, though. Even with the best covers, those little helicopters find a way in. I’ve actually slipped off a ladder once trying to clear them from a steep pitch... not my finest moment. Sometimes I wonder if it’s worth just hiring someone for the high spots, but then I remember how picky I am about getting every last bit out. Maintenance really does feel endless, especially with all these mature trees around.

I get the appeal of hiring someone, but honestly, I’ve never been convinced it’s worth the cost unless you’ve got a really tall house or mobility issues. I actually switched to a foam insert system last year—less flashy than stainless mesh, but it’s handled maple seeds better so far. Still have to rinse them out every spring, but at least I’m not up there with a trowel every month. Maybe not perfect, but it beats the constant ladder routine.

I hear you on the foam inserts—they’re not fancy, but they do the job. I tried those mesh guards a while back and all they did was collect pine needles in weird clumps, so I went back to basics. Honestly, if I didn’t enjoy a good excuse to climb up and check the roofline, I’d probably just pay someone. But for now, rinsing out the foam every spring feels like a decent compromise. It’s not glamorous, but hey, neither are gutters.
