Just redid our roof after the last hailstorm wrecked it, and the roofer suggested these GAF shingles that are supposed to handle impacts better. I was skeptical at first (you know how sales pitches go), but we had another nasty storm last week and not a single dent or crack. Pretty impressive. Curious if anyone else has tried these or has other roofing tips for storm-prone areas?

Yeah, those GAF shingles are solid, but honestly, after my last hailstorm fiasco, I went full metal roof. Sure, it sounds like you're living inside a popcorn machine during heavy rain, but hey, zero dents so far. Plus, the squirrels can't chew through itβ€”trust me, that's a bonus you didn't know you needed until you've had a furry attic invasion...

Metal roofs definitely have their perks, but one thing to consider is the noise factor you mentioned. I've found that adding a solid insulation layer underneath can really cut down on that popcorn machine effect during storms... might be worth checking out if it's bothering you.

We went with metal roofing a few years back, and yeah, the noise was definitely a thing at first. Storms sounded pretty intenseβ€”like someone throwing gravel at the roof. But once we put in some extra insulation in the attic, it toned down big-time. Honestly, now I kinda like the sound...it's weirdly relaxing. Plus, no more squirrel parties in the attic, which is a huge relief.

Interesting points about the metal roof and insulation. I've been learning a lot from working with a roofer lately, and one thing he's mentioned is that the quality of installation makes a huge difference, especially for hail resistance. Even impact-rated shingles like GAF's need proper nailing patterns and underlayment to really hold up in severe weather. He showed me how some roofs fail because the shingles weren't nailed correctlyβ€”either too high or too few nails per shingle.

Also, attic ventilation seems to help a lot. Good airflow can prevent shingles from overheating and becoming brittle over time, which makes them more vulnerable to hail damage. I never thought ventilation had anything to do with hail until he explained it step-by-step.

Metal roofs definitely have their perks, but if you're sticking with shingles, proper installation plus good attic ventilation seems to be key. Glad your new roof held up well so far...sounds like you got a solid install.
