Anyone ever try one of those salt-free conditioners? Wondering if they actually do anything or just marketing...

I’ve seen a few tenants install those, and honestly, results are mixed. Some swear by them, others say the scale’s still there, just maybe a bit less stubborn. Did you notice any difference in water pressure after switching to UF? That’s the one thing folks in my building complain about with RO—pressure drops.

- Haven’t tried the salt-free ones myself, but I’ve heard mixed stuff too—some folks say it helps with buildup, others not so much.
- Swapping RO for UF, did you notice any weird taste or smell changes? Sometimes when I’m working in older buildings, people mention that after switching filters.
- Curious if you’ve seen any difference in how appliances hold up over time. Hard water’s a pain for water heaters and boilers...

I switched from RO to UF about a year ago, mostly because the RO system was wasting a ton of water and maintenance was getting old. Honestly, I did notice a slight difference in taste at first—maybe a bit more “minerally”—but nothing off-putting. No odd smells either. As for appliances, I haven’t seen much scale buildup yet, but I’m keeping an eye on the kettle and dishwasher. Hard water’s always a concern, but so far, things seem to be holding up about the same as before. Maybe it’s too soon to tell?

That lines up with what I’ve seen—UF does let more minerals through, so a bit of a taste shift is normal. RO strips almost everything, which can make water taste flat. As for scale, you’re right to watch the kettle and dishwasher. If your source water’s on the harder side, you might start seeing buildup over time since UF won’t remove dissolved minerals like calcium or magnesium. It’s not always immediate, but it can sneak up after a year or two. If you notice white spots or film, that’s usually the first sign.

I get the concern about scale, but honestly, I switched to UF a while back and haven’t had much of an issue with buildup—at least not enough to bug me. Maybe it depends on how hard your water is? I just give my kettle a quick rinse now and then, and it’s been fine. Sometimes I think we over-worry about a bit of mineral.
