Switching from RO to UF membranes made my life way easier

- Totally get where you’re coming from on the attic insulation and airflow—made a bigger difference for me too, especially in older buildings.

Ice dams are just a pain no matter what you do... sometimes it feels like you’re just picking your battles.
Couldn’t agree more. Even with all the right layers, sometimes you just can’t win against Mother Nature.
- I’ve tried a few different underlayments over the years. Honestly, the “fancy” ones are nice, but if the basics aren’t dialed in, it doesn’t matter much.
- You’re definitely not overthinking it. Roofs are one of those things where a little paranoia pays off in the long run.

Switching to UF membranes was a game changer for me too, especially on some of the older flat roofs I manage. RO was fine, but the install headaches and constant callbacks just weren’t worth it. I do think you still need to be obsessive about ventilation and making sure the basics are solid—no membrane’s gonna save you from poor airflow or shoddy flashing. Funny how you can spend a fortune on “premium” materials, but if your soffits are blocked, you’re still getting ice dams... been there, done that.

That’s been my experience too. I remember my first winter after switching to UF membranes—felt like I’d finally cracked the code, but then we got a cold snap and boom... ice dams right over a spot where the soffit vents were basically painted shut. Made me realize how much the “little” stuff matters. The new membranes help, but they’re not magic. I still double check every vent now, probably to the point of being annoying.

Yeah, I totally get what you mean about the “little” stuff. I switched to UF membranes last year thinking it’d be a game changer, and it did help with moisture, but I still had condensation issues in the attic. Turned out, a couple of my baffles were knocked loose and blocking airflow. Now I go through every vent and check for cobwebs or insulation drift before winter hits. Membranes are great, but if the air can’t move, you’re still in for trouble.

Couldn’t agree more—seen too many “miracle” upgrades get wrecked by a blocked vent or a rogue raccoon.
- UF membranes are solid for moisture, but yeah, airflow’s the unsung hero.
- I once found a bird’s nest wedged in a soffit vent... talk about unplanned insulation.
- Quick tip: flashlight and a broom handle—best attic inspection tools ever.
- Don’t trust your attic to stay tidy on its own. It’s like a teenager’s room up there.
