I’ve seen some pretty gnarly stuff come out of pipes from the 60s and 70s—rust flakes, weird slime, you name it. Honestly, if you’re picking up a taste, I’d trust your gut. UF is fine for newer places, but with older plumbing, RO just gives you that extra layer of “I don’t want to know what’s in there” protection. Swapping filters is annoying, but I’d rather deal with that than mystery minerals in my coffee.

- Totally get the concern with old pipes—seen some wild stuff when we’ve opened up ceilings for roof leaks.
- RO does seem like overkill sometimes, but if you’re dealing with decades-old plumbing, I’d rather not risk it either.
- UF is easier to maintain, but I’ve noticed it doesn’t always catch that metallic taste from rusty lines.
- Swapping filters is a pain, but honestly, less hassle than dealing with weird water stains on appliances or coffee that tastes off.
- If you’re in an older house, I’d stick with RO too... just feels safer, even if it’s a bit more work.
