Honestly, I’d rather swap a few cartridges than deal with RO’s waste and slow flow, but it’s always a tradeoff.

I get where you’re coming from—RO is a pain for well water, especially after storms. The waste always bugged me, too. I switched to UF membranes last year and haven’t looked back. They handle the sediment surge way better, and the flow rate is night and day compared to RO. Still need pre-filters, but at least I’m not dumping gallons down the drain every day. If you’re already using settling barrels, UF might be worth a look. It’s not perfect, but it’s less hassle overall in my experience.

That’s the part that always made me shake my head—watching all that water just go to waste with RO. I get the appeal for city water, but on a well, especially if you get a lot of silt or iron after storms, it’s like fighting a losing battle. I’ve seen folks burn through RO membranes way too fast because of that.

UF membranes are definitely easier on the nerves if you don’t need to strip out absolutely everything. You get way better flow, and you’re not stuck babysitting the system or worrying about whether your septic can handle all the reject water. Only thing is, if you’ve got any kind of bacterial issues, UF isn’t always enough on its own—UV or chlorination still has to come into play sometimes.

Honestly, if you’re already using settling barrels and don’t have crazy contamination, I’d pick swapping a few filters over dealing with RO headaches any day. Just keep an eye on what’s coming in from the well… sometimes it surprises you.
