Just figured out that switching to a reflective roof membrane seriously cuts down on summer cooling costs. Wasn't expecting such a noticeable difference, but the AC runs way less now. Anyone else tried something similar or got other roof tips?
"Wasn't expecting such a noticeable difference, but the AC runs way less now."
Yeah, reflective membranes can really surprise you. I haven't tried that exact method, but last summer I painted my roof with a white elastomeric coating—pretty budget-friendly and straightforward to apply yourself if you're handy. Just cleaned the roof thoroughly, patched up any cracks, and rolled on two coats. Took me a weekend, but it was worth it. Noticed the attic temp dropped significantly, and the AC didn't kick on nearly as often.
One thing I'd caution though: make sure your roof is structurally sound before applying anything. A neighbor of mine skipped the prep work and ended up sealing moisture under the coating... wasn't pretty.
Has anyone experimented with attic ventilation improvements alongside reflective coatings? Curious if combining methods makes a noticeable difference or if it's just diminishing returns at that point.

I've seen attic ventilation upgrades make a pretty big difference, actually. Last year I installed ridge vents along with soffit vents—wasn't too complicated, just cut openings along the ridge line and soffits, then installed the vents. Paired it with reflective shingles instead of coating, but same general idea. Definitely noticed the attic cooled down faster at night, and AC usage dropped noticeably. So I'd say combining methods isn't diminishing returns... more like complementary improvements. Just my two cents.

Yeah, ventilation upgrades are underrated. A couple summers ago I added some extra soffit vents and a solar-powered attic fan—nothing fancy, just a weekend project. Honestly didn't expect much, but it made a noticeable difference. Attic temps dropped quicker in the evening, and the upstairs bedrooms felt way less stuffy. Seems like combining reflective coatings or shingles with better airflow is the sweet spot for comfort and savings...
