I hear you on the “good enough” approach biting back. I tried to save a few bucks skipping ice shield on my garage roof—figured it was just a detached, low-traffic spot. Cue last winter’s freak ice storm and now I’ve got water stains on the ceiling. Lesson learned... but man, it’s tough balancing cost and peace of mind. Anyone else feel like every “upgrade” adds up way faster than you expect?

I get the temptation to cut corners, but honestly, I’m not convinced every “upgrade” is worth it either. I’ve lived in my place 15 years—original builder-grade shingles, no fancy ice shield, and only minor patch jobs here and there. We get our share of snow and ice, but I haven’t had major issues. Sometimes I think the industry pushes a lot of extras that aren’t always necessary, especially for detached garages or sheds. Not saying skip everything, but I’d weigh the risk vs. cost for each spot.

- I hear you on the “extras.” My last roof job, contractor tried to upsell me on all sorts of stuff—synthetic underlayment, ice shield everywhere, even for my shed.
- Ended up just doing basic felt and regular shingles for the shed. No issues after 7 winters.
- Main house, I did spring for ice shield in the valleys since that’s where I’ve seen leaks before.
- Curious—anyone actually regret skipping the upgrades? Or had a spot where cutting back bit you later?
- Sometimes feels like it’s more about peace of mind than real risk...
