Little-known uses for that hammer loop on your belt

I’ve always wondered if I’m missing something with that loop. I tried clipping my tape measure to it once, but it kept banging into my knee—super annoying. Has anyone figured out a way to keep stuff from swinging around so much? Or maybe there’s some cheap attachment that makes it more useful? I’m all for repurposing things, but half the time I just forget it’s even there.

Honestly, I’ve never found that loop all that useful for anything besides a hammer. Tape measures, pliers, even a small drill—everything else just swings around and gets in the way. If you’re looking to keep stuff from swinging, I’d skip the loop altogether and go with a pouch or holster that sits higher on your belt. Those fabric pouches with multiple slots are way more secure, and you can actually find some cheap ones at hardware stores or even online.

If you really want to use the loop, try threading a short carabiner through it and then clipping your tool to the carabiner. That keeps things a bit tighter to your leg, but honestly, it’s still not perfect. For me, the loop ends up being more of a snag hazard than anything else—especially when I’m up on a roof and can’t afford to trip over my own gear. Just my two cents... sometimes the old-school solutions aren’t worth repurposing.

That loop is definitely a mixed bag. I’ve tried using it for a few things over the years—chalk line, speed square, even a water bottle once when I was desperate—but nothing really works as well as just sticking with the hammer. Anything heavier or bulkier just ends up knocking into your leg or catching on ladders.

I get the idea of using a carabiner, but honestly, even that’s a bit awkward if you’re moving around on a steep pitch. I’ve actually seen someone use it to hold their gloves when they’re not in use, which isn’t the worst idea if you’re constantly taking them off and on. But for tools? Nine times out of ten, it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

If you’re doing a lot of work up high or in tight spaces, those higher pouches or magnetic wristbands are way less hassle. The loop’s just kind of... there. Maybe it’s nostalgia at this point.

Funny, I’ve thought the same. I mostly ignore mine unless I’m actually carrying a hammer, but every once in a while I’ll hang a small flashlight from it if I’m crawling around under the house. Not perfect, but better than fumbling in the dark. Has anyone found a way to keep it from banging against your leg all day? That’s what drives me nuts.

- Totally get what you mean about it whacking your leg. Drives me nuts too, especially if I’m wearing shorts.
- I’ve tried clipping a small carabiner on the loop and hanging my tape measure there instead. Doesn’t swing as much, but still not perfect.
- Sometimes I’ll slip a rag through it if I’m painting or doing messy work. Keeps it handy and doesn’t bang around as much.
- I actually tried wrapping a bit of foam pipe insulation around the loop once, just to see if it’d cushion stuff. Looked weird, but cut down on the noise and bruises.
- Honestly, I keep thinking there’s gotta be a better use for it. Like, why don’t they make it so you can cinch it closed when you’re not using it?
- Anyway, glad I’m not the only one who finds it more annoying than useful most days. At least it’s good for something when you’re crawling around and need both hands free... even if it’s just a flashlight holder.
