I've been trying to mark some straight lines on plywood for a shelving project, and figured a chalk line would be the easiest way. But every time I snap it, the line comes out kinda blurry or smudged, not crisp at all. I mean, it's usable, but it's annoying because I end up second-guessing myself and re-measuring everything. I'm using regular blue chalk powder, nothing fancy, and the line itself is pretty new.

Am I pulling it too tight or maybe not tight enough? Or could it be the surface of the plywood that's causing this? I sanded it lightly beforehand, thinking it'd help, but nope...still smudgy. Maybe there's some trick or technique I'm missing here. If anyone's got tips or has dealt with this before, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I've never found chalk lines to be super crisp on plywood either, honestly. The surface grain tends to soak it up and blur the edges a bit. One thing that helps is giving the line just one sharp snap—too many snaps or dragging it can make it worse. You could also try red chalk instead of blue; for some reason, red seems to stick better and give clearer lines. Or... ditch the chalk altogether and use a long straightedge with a pencil. Bit more hassle, but at least you'll stop second-guessing yourself.

I've actually had better luck with blue chalk than red, weirdly enough. Maybe it's just the brand I use, but red always seems to smear more for me—especially if the plywood's a bit damp or humid. Honestly though, I've mostly switched to using a laser line these days. Bit pricier upfront, but man... no smudging, no snapping, and no second-guessing if my line's straight or not. Plus, lasers are just cooler anyway, right?
