So last night, I'm laying in bed and hear this steady drip-drip-drip sound from above. I climb up to the attic, flashlight in hand, and there's water leaking through the ceiling onto some old boxes. Moved stuff around and threw a tarp over it, but now I'm thinking...what if it wasn't just rainwater? Maybe something else entirely...
"but now I'm thinking...what if it wasn't just rainwater? Maybe something else entirely..."
Hmm, interesting theory, but honestly, 9 times out of 10 it's just plain old rainwater. Seen this a lot—usually a loose shingle or cracked flashing around vents. But hey, I've also found some weird stuff up in attics before...once had a client convinced they had paranormal activity because of mysterious dripping. Turned out to be condensation from an improperly vented bathroom fan. Ghosts would've been cooler though.
Anyway, quick checklist:
- Check roof shingles and flashing first.
- Look for signs of critters (droppings, nests, etc.).
- Inspect plumbing vents or HVAC ducts for condensation issues.
- If you find slime or discoloration, could be mold or algae growth—still water-related but needs attention.
Odds are you're safe from attic monsters or alien goo...but hey, never hurts to double-check.
"Ghosts would've been cooler though."
Haha, true...but speaking of critters, ever had squirrels chew through your flashing? Happened to me last spring—little guys caused quite a leak. Maybe check for tiny teeth marks?
