- That patch goop is a lifesaver in a pinch, but yeah, it’s just holding things together until you can really get up there and fix it.
- Flashing tape’s solid for small cracks—just make sure the area’s as dry as you can get it first or it won’t stick for long.
- Tarps are a must if you’re waiting out a storm, but wind can rip ’em right off if you don’t anchor them well (learned that the hard way one winter).
- I’ve noticed folks sometimes skip checking the attic for leaks—water loves to travel before it shows up on your ceiling.

Anyone tried those spray-on sealers? I keep seeing ads but haven’t met anyone who swears by them yet.

I’ve tried the spray stuff on a shed roof, and honestly, it slowed the leak but didn’t really hold up after a couple of rains. Not terrible if you’re desperate, but I wouldn’t trust it for anything long-term. You’re right about the attic—found a drip there before it ever showed up inside.

Yeah, those spray-on sealers are kinda like putting a band-aid on a busted pipe—might buy you a little time, but don’t count on it for more than a quick patch. If you’re dealing with shingles, I usually tell folks to grab a tarp and some bricks or 2x4s to weigh it down until you can get a real fix. Not glamorous, but it keeps the water out. Just don’t forget it up there... seen more than one “temporary” tarp turn into a year-long roof accessory.

I’ve had mixed luck with tarps too—sometimes they shift in a windstorm or start leaking if you don’t get them tight enough. On my old ranch house, I tried roofing cement for a quick patch around a vent and it actually held up through a couple storms, but it was messy and only lasted a season. Has anyone tried those peel-and-stick roof patches? Curious if they’re any better for a fast fix.

Tried those peel-and-stick patches last fall when a branch punched a hole through my shed roof. Honestly, they went on fast and stuck surprisingly well, even though the surface was a bit damp (which I’m sure the instructions say not to do). Held up through a couple heavy rains, but once winter hit and things got icy, the edges started peeling. Not a forever fix, but better than wrestling a tarp in the wind. If you’ve got a few dry days ahead, they’ll buy you some time.
