Those gutter screens with big holes are basically squirrel highways for debris, in my experience. I tried the micro-mesh ones too, but ice dams just made things worse. At this point, I just budget for a decent extension ladder and do a spring and fall cleanout. Less hassle than fixing overflow damage or dealing with frozen blockages later.
Funny thing, I actually had the opposite experience with micro-mesh screens. Maybe it’s just my roof pitch or the way the gutters are hung, but after I switched to a finer mesh, I stopped getting those big leafy clogs every fall. Ice dams are still a pain, but for me they were more about attic insulation than the screens themselves. Climbing up twice a year is fine now, but I’m hoping as I get older I won’t have to keep doing that forever... Not sure there’s ever a perfect fix, but I’ll take fewer trips up the ladder any day.

That’s exactly the kind of situation where micro-mesh can drive you nuts. I’ve seen it too—especially with those big old maples or even pines that just won’t quit dropping stuff. Sometimes it’s like the trees have it out for your gutters. On flatter roofs, debris just hangs out instead of sliding off, and if you’re not up there every season brushing off the seeds, you get a mat that water can’t push through.
I actually lean toward larger-perforation screens for folks with a lot of tree cover and a low pitch. They let a bit more junk in, but at least they don’t turn into a seed parking lot. You’ll still have to clean the gutters once in a while, but at least water actually gets through when it rains hard.
Curious what kind of trees you’re dealing with? Around here (Midwest), maples and sweetgums are the real troublemakers, but I’ve also seen oak catkins and pine needles do their worst. And are your gutters tucked tight under the drip edge, or do they sit a bit lower? The closer they are, the less chance for stuff to settle on the mesh itself—but then overflow can be more of an issue if things back up.
I guess my main gripe is that gutter protection is never totally set-and-forget. Even with the “best” system, something always finds its way in or on top. Had a customer last fall who put in a fancy stainless mesh system, only to watch it clog solid with wet birch leaves after one windy weekend. He was not thrilled.
Anyway, curious if you’ve tried anything besides micro-mesh? Some folks go for those foam inserts, but I’ve seen them turn into compost piles after a couple seasons... Not sure there’s a perfect answer, just different headaches depending on your setup and what’s growing nearby.
