Every time it rains, my driveway drain gets completely clogged up with leaves, twigs, and random junk from the yard. I've tried putting a basic mesh cover over it, but that just seems to make the water pool up even faster. That's actually a pretty solid idea. I did something similar last fall after getting fed up with constantly clearing out soggy leaves and twigs. Instead of bricks though, I used some landscaping stones I had leftover from a patio project. Just stacked them loosely in a semi-circle around the drain, nothing fancy. It worked surprisingly well—most of the bigger stuff got caught up on the stones, and the water still flowed through easily enough.
I agree with you about mesh covers; tried one once and it was a nightmare. It clogged up almost immediately, and then I had to scrape off a nasty layer of wet leaves every few days. Not my idea of fun. Plus, if you forget about it for a week or two, good luck getting that slimy mess off without gagging...
One other thing I've seen people do is plant some low shrubs or ornamental grasses strategically around the drain area. The plants act as a natural filter, catching debris before it even gets close.
