Flashing's definitely crucial, but I'd argue ventilation is equally important and often overlooked. I've seen roofs with perfect flashing still end up with moisture issues because the attic wasn't breathing properly. Had a job last year where the homeowner did regular checks, caught nothing unusual visually, but ended up with moldy insulation due to poor airflow. Just something else to keep in mind—roof health isn't always about what's visible on the surface...

Good point about ventilation. When I bought my first house, I thought flashing and shingles were pretty much the whole story. Then winter hit and I noticed ice dams forming along the gutters—turns out my attic wasn't ventilated enough either. Luckily caught it early, but it made me wonder: how often do you guys actually check or clean your attic vents? Feels like something most of us put off until there's already a problem...

You're definitely ahead of the curve catching that ventilation issue early. As a roofing contractor, I see this scenario play out pretty regularly—homeowners often underestimate attic ventilation until ice dams or moisture problems pop up. Honestly, most people don't even think about their attic vents until there's already damage or noticeable issues. Ideally, a quick visual inspection every season change is enough to spot blockages or buildup. But realistically? Even once or twice a year can make a huge difference. Good on you for being proactive; it's way easier (and cheaper) to address ventilation early than to deal with the headaches of water damage or mold remediation down the line.

Haha, guilty as charged—I manage a few properties, and you'd be amazed how many tenants call me panicking about mysterious ceiling stains or weird attic smells. Turns out, it's almost always ventilation-related. Now I make a habit of checking vents whenever I'm up there for something else. Curious though, anyone else find weird stuff in their attic during these checks? Found a vintage Monopoly set once...no cash inside, sadly.

I get the attic vent thing, but Monopoly? Lucky find. All I ever discovered was a creepy porcelain doll tucked behind insulation...still not sure how it got there or if I even wanna know. Anyone else stumble onto something unsettling up there?
