can you actually get your money back if a roofing job goes south?
I'm about to sign a roofing contract, but I'm kinda nervous about what happens if things don't go as planned. Like, is it common to have some sort of refund clause or protection built in? Curious how others handled this...

A refund clause isn’t usually the main protection I’d look for. Roofing contracts more often protect you through clear payment milestones, a written workmanship warranty, and a deadline for correcting defects.
I’d want language saying the contractor must repair specified problems within a set number of days after written notice, and that you can terminate for a material breach that isn’t cured. Keep the final payment large enough to give that remedy some leverage, but make sure the contract and local law support any withholding. A blanket promise to “refund everything” can be harder to enforce than those concrete obligations.
