I’ve actually seen lighter composite tiles make a bigger difference in attic temps, but only when paired with decent attic fans or ridge vents. On their own, yeah, not a game changer. Also, copper strips are great—just don’t let your gutters turn green... learned that the hard way.
I get the hype around composite tiles, but honestly, unless you’ve got proper ventilation up there, the temp drop isn’t as dramatic as folks hope. We put in lighter tiles last year—didn’t notice much until we finally upgraded to a ridge vent. As for copper, yeah, it’ll keep moss at bay, but it does a number on aluminum gutters over time... learned that after a couple seasons of green streaks. Worth it overall? Maybe, but only if you’re doing the whole system right.
You nailed it—ventilation makes way more difference than I expected. We swapped to composite tiles last fall, and honestly, the attic was still baking until I bit the bullet and added soffit vents. Only then did things start to cool down. On the copper, I had the same streaks on my gutters... kind of annoying, but I guess it’s a trade-off if you hate moss. Feels like every “upgrade” just leads to another project, but at least the tiles look sharp.
Ventilation really is one of those things you don’t appreciate until you’ve lived through a summer without it. We did the composite tile swap a couple years back and, like you, I figured that alone would help with the heat. Nope—attic was still an oven until I added a ridge vent. On the copper stains, I hear you... I tried scrubbing them but gave up after a while. It’s always something, but yeah, the new tiles do make the house look way better from the curb. At least there’s that silver lining.

Honestly, I was surprised how little difference the composite tiles made for attic temps too. I went with soffit vents and a solar-powered fan instead of a ridge vent—cheaper upfront and seems to keep things manageable, at least in my climate. As for those copper stains, I’ve had better luck with a diluted vinegar solution, but it’s still a pain. The curb appeal is real though... can’t argue with that.
