roofing dilemma: is metal really worth the extra cash?

Just got a quote for replacing our roof, and um, wow. Metal roofing is like double the price of shingles. I mean, I get it's supposed to last longer and all but...is it really worth that much more? Has anyone else faced this decision recently?
