when do you usually tackle gutter cleaning?

"Metal guards, especially aluminum or stainless steel ones with smaller openings, usually hold up better."

Couldn't agree more—metal guards are definitely worth the extra investment. Plastic ones might seem budget-friendly at first, but trust me, you'll pay for it later in repairs. I've seen cheap guards collapse under heavy snow or ice buildup, creating a mess of bent gutters and damaged shingles. Better to spend a little extra now than have to replace half your roofline down the road...

I've gotta say, metal guards do sound tempting, but have you ever tried installing them yourself? I gave it a shot last fall, thinking "how hard can it be?" (famous last words, right?). Ended up spending half the weekend on a ladder, wrestling with aluminum sections that refused to line up properly. Sure, they held up great through winter—no collapsing or bending—but man, the installation was a real pain.

Now, to answer the original question about gutter cleaning timing: does anyone else wait until they notice water overflowing during a storm and then panic-clean on the next dry weekend...or is that just me? I swear I have good intentions every spring and fall, but life happens. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and upgrade to those smaller-opening metal guards you guys are talking about. Wouldn't mind skipping the ladder dance every year...

I feel your pain on the metal guards—tried installing them myself once, never again. My approach now is pretty much like yours:

- Wait till I see water pouring over the sides mid-storm.
- Promise myself I'll clean them next weekend.
- Actually clean them two weekends later after another storm reminds me.

Honestly, guards sound great, but the upfront cost and hassle keep me procrastinating. Maybe someday...

Yeah, I totally get that hesitation—guards can be pricey upfront. Have you looked into some of the newer mesh-style guards? They're easier to install than those metal nightmares (been there myself...), and they don't clog as easily. Might save you from that mid-storm waterfall scenario. Could be worth checking out if you're tired of the weekend gutter-cleaning dance.

Yeah, mesh guards are decent—installed some last spring. Quick thoughts:
- Easier DIY install than metal ones, no sharp edges.
- Still gotta brush off leaves occasionally, but way less buildup.
- Worth it if you're tired of ladder balancing acts every fall...
