Thinking about installing leaf filters—worth the hype or waste of cash?

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had a few customers who were pretty happy with the solid-surface filters—especially on lower-pitch roofs. If the install’s done right and the gutters are sized for heavy rain, you don’t always get that waterfall effect. Still gotta brush off the tops now and then, but it beats digging out handfuls of sludge. Not perfect, but in some setups it’s a decent tradeoff. Just depends on your roof and what kind of trees you’re battling.

- Totally agree it’s not a one-size-fits-all thing.
- I looked into the solid-surface filters last fall—my main concern was cost vs. how much hassle they’d actually save me.
- My roof’s got a pretty steep pitch and a ton of maples nearby, so I was worried about stuff just sliding right over and clogging the edge.
- Ended up going with a cheaper mesh insert instead. Still have to knock off the bigger leaves every couple weeks, but it’s way less gross than scooping out wet gunk.
- I do think if you’ve got a lower slope and not a ton of pine needles, those solid covers could be worth it.
- For me, the price was a little steep for something I’d still have to maintain, but I get why folks like them—especially if you’re not a fan of ladders.
- If you’re already cleaning out gutters a few times a year, even a partial fix is a win.
- Just gotta weigh the upfront cost against how much time (and grossness) you’re actually saving.
- Not perfect, but definitely better than nothing if you pick the right style for your setup.

I went down the YouTube rabbit hole on these last spring and got convinced I’d finally be free from gutter gunk. Spoiler: not quite. Tried the solid covers—looked sharp, but the first big rain, water just shot right over them like my gutters weren’t even there. Maybe it’s my old house or the way the roof angles, but I swapped them for mesh after a month. Still gotta clear out some leaves, but at least it’s not full-on gutter soup anymore. Guess it’s always a tradeoff... unless you like climbing ladders for fun.

Had a similar experience with the solid covers—looked clean, but the water just shot right off during heavy rain. My place has a steep roof pitch and I think that made it worse. Switched to the fine mesh screens and yeah, they still need a quick brush-off sometimes, but at least the gutters aren’t overflowing or packed with sludge. Honestly, I don’t think there’s a perfect fix unless you’re cool with climbing up there every fall. For me, mesh is less hassle, but it’s not magic.

That’s been my experience too—every system seems to have its own trade-offs. I’m curious, did you notice any ice damming with the mesh screens in winter? I’ve heard some folks say they can freeze up, but not sure if that’s just hype or a real issue.
