Thinking about installing leaf filters - worth the hype or waste of cash?

Maintenance-free is definitely a stretch. I manage a few places with those mesh-style filters, and honestly, they do keep out the big stuff, but pine needles and those tiny oak bits still pile up on top. You end up trading one chore for another - less scooping, more brushing. It’s less gross, sure, but if you’ve got a lot of trees, you’ll still be up there once or twice a year. Not a miracle, just a bit less messy.

That’s exactly what I noticed after putting mesh guards on last fall. Step 1: fewer clogs, which is nice. Step 2: now I’m up there with a leaf blower every few months, especially after windy days. Not maintenance-free, just a different kind of upkeep. If you’ve got a lot of overhanging branches, it’s still a regular thing.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I put in the mesh guards a couple years back thinking I’d never have to mess with the gutters again, but it’s more like trading one hassle for another. Like, I’m not digging out gross wet leaves anymore, but now I’m up on the ladder with a broom or leaf blower every time the wind goes nuts. Still better than dealing with clogs and overflow, but definitely not “set it and forget it.”

I will say, after a big storm last fall, I was glad not to find my downspouts jammed up. But yeah, if you’ve got trees hanging over your roof, there’s no way around some regular maintenance. At least it’s a little less nasty than scooping out sludge by hand... Small wins, I guess.
