Wondering if they’re any less prone to ice issues or just a different headache.
Had a neighbor try the foam inserts a couple years back. They were hoping it’d be low-maintenance, but honestly, it just turned into a different mess. The foam clogged up with gunk and seeds, and then in winter, it actually held moisture and froze into a solid block. Water ended up spilling over the edge anyway. Might be better for big leaves, but with pine needles or a lot of small debris, it’s still a pain. Mesh isn’t perfect either, but at least you can see the clogs easier.
- Gotta push back a bit on this:
The foam clogged up with gunk and seeds, and then in winter, it actually held moisture and froze into a solid block.
- I’ve seen the same thing with mesh, though—especially if you get a lot of fine debris or pollen. Mesh can freeze up too, just usually not as solid.
- Honestly, no system is “set and forget.” If you’re in a spot with heavy pine needles or maple seeds, you’ll be up there clearing stuff out no matter what.
- Personally, I’d rather have something visible like mesh. At least then you can spot trouble before it’s a big problem.
- Still, none of these are magic. Sometimes just easier to budget for a fall/spring cleanout and call it good.

Yeah, that’s been my experience too. I’ve tried both foam and mesh on my folks’ place and honestly, they both ended up needing regular checks, especially after a windy week. The mesh was easier to spot when it got gunked up though. Has anyone actually found a filter that works well with those tiny maple helicopters? Or is it just wishful thinking at this point...
Those maple helicopters are relentless. I’ve yet to see a filter that actually keeps them out for good—mine just sit on top and eventually clog things up anyway. Honestly, it’s more about slowing the mess than stopping it. Still gotta get up there sometimes.
Here’s my usual routine: step one, install the fancy filter. Step two, watch as the maple helicopters laugh in my face and pile up anyway. Step three, climb up there with a leaf blower and hope I don’t end up in the neighbor’s yard. Has anyone found a filter that actually works with those spinners, or is it just wishful thinking?
