Thinking about installing leaf filters—worth the hype or waste of cash?

Had a similar experience with foam inserts—definitely not ideal in snowy areas. But leaf filters (the metal mesh kind) have worked pretty well from what I've seen. They shed snow and ice better, and leaves don't stick as much. Not perfect, obviously, but way less maintenance than foam. Might be worth giving them a shot if you're tired of constant gutter cleaning...

I've had the metal mesh ones for a couple years now, and honestly, they're pretty decent. Definitely agree they're better than foam inserts—those things were a nightmare in winter. The mesh isn't totally foolproof (still get some pine needles sneaking through), but it's cut down my gutter cleaning by like 80%. Worth it in my book, especially if you're tired of climbing ladders every other weekend...

Have you noticed any issues with ice dams or buildup during winter with the mesh? I've seen a few cases where they trap snow and ice, causing some overflow. Curious if you've had similar experiences...

- Seen this happen occasionally, especially if the mesh openings are super tight.
- Usually worse on shady sides of houses—less sun, more buildup.
- Maybe try heat cables along with the mesh?
- Curious, have you checked attic insulation and ventilation? Can make a big difference...

Agree on the attic insulation and ventilation—made a noticeable difference for me. Leaf filters can be hit or miss... installed some fine mesh ones a few years back, and while they kept leaves out, smaller debris still built up, especially on the north side. Ended up swapping to a slightly wider mesh and added heat cables in trouble spots. Not perfect, but way less hassle overall.
