Would tile roofs survive a harsh winter up north?

- I looked into tile before buying and honestly, the maintenance scared me off.
- Winters here are brutal. Freeze-thaw would wreck my patience, not just my roof.
- Metal’s loud, but at least I’m not up there every spring swapping tiles.
- My neighbor has tile—he’s always chasing down leaks and cracks after storms.
- Maybe tile’s fine further south, but up here? Not worth the stress for me.

That’s my worry too. I like the look of tile, but every time I see my neighbor up there patching things after a storm, I’m glad I stuck with asphalt. Cheaper, less hassle, and I can actually afford to fix it if something goes wrong. Metal was tempting, but the price tag and noise? Not for me.

Funny thing, most folks worry about metal being noisy, but with proper insulation it’s usually not much louder than shingles. I’ve inspected a few in blizzard country and they’re holding up way better than tile or asphalt—no cracked tiles, no blown-off shingles. Price hurts, yeah, but less patching and fewer leaks down the road. Just saying, sometimes you pay now or you pay later...

That’s what’s got me torn. I looked at tile, but up here (northern MN), the freeze-thaw cycles are brutal. My neighbor’s clay tiles cracked after just a couple winters, and repairs are a pain. Metal’s expensive, yeah, but I’m starting to see the appeal—less maintenance, fewer worries about ice dams. Noise was a concern, but like you said, insulation makes a big difference. Still, that upfront cost stings...

- Been there with the sticker shock on metal. It’s a lot up front, no way around it.
- Up here (I’m in central ND), I’ve seen tile just not hold up—especially after a couple rough winters. The freeze-thaw is brutal on anything porous.
- Metal’s noisy during hail, but honestly, with decent insulation and attic space, it’s not that bad. I barely notice it now.
- Maintenance is way less hassle than shingles or tile. No cracked pieces to hunt down every spring.
- If you’re planning to stay put for a while, the long-term savings and peace of mind might be worth the initial pain... at least that’s how I justified it to myself.
