- Totally agree, learned this myself recently.
- Thought a quick caulk job would hold me over till spring... nope.
- Ended up with water stains on the ceiling and a weekend spent replacing drywall.
- Proper flashing and vents seemed pricey at first, but honestly cheaper than fixing damage later.
- Plus, peace of mind is worth something too, right?

Yeah, caulk's a band-aid at best. If you're seeing water stains, first step is checking attic ventilation—make sure vents aren't blocked or improperly installed. Flashing around chimneys and vents is next... tedious, but worth it long-term.

Totally agree on caulk being temporary... learned that the hard way myself. When we first moved in, I noticed a few water stains and thought caulking around the vents would solve it. Nope—just delayed the inevitable.

Here's what actually helped me out: First, I climbed into the attic (not fun, but necessary) and checked the insulation around the vent pipes. Turns out, mine wasn't sealed properly. I added some proper flashing sleeves around the pipes, making sure they overlapped correctly to shed water. Next, I checked that insulation wasn't blocking airflow from soffit vents—sometimes insulation gets pushed too far into the eaves. Pulled it back a bit to let air circulate better.

Finally, I made sure ridge vents were clear of debris (leaves and stuff can pile up). After a couple rainy nights, no more midnight drips. It was a bit of a hassle, but honestly felt pretty satisfying to tackle it myself. Hang in there—you got this!

Been there, done that... attic crawling is definitely not my idea of weekend fun, but you're spot-on about flashing sleeves. Caulk is like the duct tape of roofing—good for a quick fix, but not a long-term solution. I had similar issues with insulation blocking airflow; pulling it back made a surprising difference. Glad you got it sorted, nothing beats the satisfaction of DIY-ing your way out of a midnight drip situation.

Did you check if your soffit vents were clear too? I've seen a lot of attics where insulation got stuffed right up against them—kills airflow completely. Caulk definitely isn't a permanent fix, but sometimes it's all you've got at 2 AM, right? Curious though, did you end up replacing the flashing sleeves entirely or just resealing them? I've heard mixed opinions on that...
