Been there myself—silicone sealants always seem like a good idea at first, but they're really just band-aids. Roofing-specific sealants are definitely a step up, but honestly, if you're dealing with rusty nails and persistent leaks, you might wanna look into replacing those nails altogether. I know it's a pain, but sometimes tackling the root cause saves you headaches down the line. Good luck though...roofing issues are never fun.
Totally agree—sealants are just temporary fixes. I've inspected plenty of roofs where rusty nails were the culprit behind bigger issues like wood rot or mold. Replacing them now might save you from pricier repairs later...just my two cents. Good luck!
Replacing nails is definitely the way to go, but I'm curious—are you guys using galvanized or stainless steel nails for replacements? I've found stainless holds up better long-term, especially in damp climates...might be worth considering.
I've mostly used galvanized nails myself, but your stainless steel suggestion actually makes a lot of sense. A few years back, I built a small deck in my backyard—thought galvanized would be good enough. Fast forward two wet winters later, and I was already spotting rust stains creeping in. Ended up redoing half the nails with stainless steel. Lesson learned the hard way, I guess... stainless definitely seems worth the extra bucks if you're in a damp area.
Had a similar issue when I helped reroof my uncle's shed last spring. Thought galvanized nails would hold up fine, but after just one rainy season, rust streaks started showing up. Switched to stainless steel halfway through—definitely pricier, but worth it for peace of mind.
