Thinking about replacing my roof—are shingles really worth it?

I keep going back and forth on this, especially after reading about all the patchwork regret. I’ve got a 1990s ranch in central Texas, and the roof’s original architectural shingles are finally curling up like potato chips. I was leaning toward metal, but

“hail can turn it into a golf ball, and the noise is no joke if your insulation isn’t top notch.”
That’s making me second guess things—our hailstorms here can get wild, and I’m not sure my attic insulation is up to par.

Here’s what’s running through my head step by step:

1. **Cost** – The quotes I’ve gotten for metal are almost double what the shingle roof would run. But then again, if it lasts twice as long…? But if it’s going to look dented after every spring storm, maybe that longevity doesn’t matter as much.

2. **Noise** – I actually like rain sounds, but not sure how charming it’d be during a full-on Texas thunderstorm at 2am. Anyone have experience with that? Does more insulation really help or is it just always loud?

3. **Heat** – My current dark shingles definitely make the house hotter in summer. Lighter colors seem smart, but does it really make a big difference? Like, will my AC bill actually drop or is it just wishful thinking?

4. **Warranties** – I keep seeing “lifetime” this and “30-year” that, but

“Warranties are mostly marketing fluff in my experience.”
Is there any actual value to these or should I just ignore them?

5. **Resale** – Not planning to move soon, but who knows. Is there any real bump in value (or buyer interest) for metal vs shingles? Or do most folks not care as long as it’s newish and not leaking?

I’m tempted by architectural shingles since they seem like a middle ground—less expensive than metal and supposedly tougher than the old 3-tabs I’ve got now. Still can’t decide if that’s the smarter move or if I’ll regret not spending more upfront.

Curious if anyone’s gone from shingles to metal (or vice versa)? Did you notice a difference with noise or temperature inside? And on the color thing—how much does roof color actually matter day-to-day?

I hear you on the hail—central Texas storms are no joke. But honestly, I’ve seen metal roofs take a beating and still not leak, even if they look a bit rough after. The noise thing is overblown in my experience, unless your attic’s basically empty.

More insulation really does help, and it’ll lower your AC bills either way. I wouldn’t write off a metal roof just for the dents—most buyers care more about leaks than looks, at least around here. Color-wise, lighter does make a difference with heat, but don’t expect miracles unless you also beef up the attic insulation.

I’ve managed a few properties with both shingle and metal roofs around Austin. Honestly, after that hailstorm last spring, the metal roofs looked rough but didn’t leak at all. The shingle ones? Had to patch three of them.

That’s been my experience too. Dents bug some folks, but leaks are what really kill a sale. Insulation definitely helps with noise, but if your attic’s empty or barely insulated, yeah, it’ll be loud in a storm—no way around it.
