Fire-resistant barriers under green roofs actually make a lot of sense, especially if you’re in an area where blackouts are common during fire season. I’ve seen folks use mineral wool or even sheet metal as a layer between the structure and the soil—adds some peace of mind if irrigation fails. It’s not a perfect fix, but it can buy you time. Maintenance is still the real game-changer, though. If you let things dry out or get weedy, no barrier’s gonna save you from flying embers. I’d say it’s all about layering your defenses, not just relying on one trick.

Layering is really the only way to go—couldn’t agree more. I’ve put in mineral wool under a few green roofs, and it’s a solid step, but I’ve seen folks get a little too confident once that’s in place. If you don’t keep up with trimming and pulling weeds, especially late summer, all bets are off. One thing I’d add: watch out for plastic root barriers. They can melt or even fuel a fire if things get hot enough. Metal’s heavier, but at least it won’t burn. Maintenance is a pain, but it’s cheaper than rebuilding after a fire...

Interesting point about the plastic root barriers—I’ve seen a few melted ones after hot summers, and it’s not pretty. I’m curious, though: has anyone actually seen metal barriers rust out or cause drainage issues over time? I get the fire risk, but sometimes I wonder if we’re trading one problem for another. Also, for folks with older green roofs, how often are you checking for hidden gaps or spots where weeds sneak in? I’ve found some surprises during inspections, especially after a dry spell...

Metal barriers definitely have their own quirks. I’ve seen a couple that started rusting out after maybe 8-10 years, especially where water pooled up against them—usually spots where the drainage wasn’t quite right or the slope was off. The rust itself isn’t always the main problem, but once it starts flaking, you can get weird blockages or even sharp edges poking through the membrane. Not fun to fix.

Drainage issues are real if the metal shifts or warps over time. I’ve had to clear out some gnarly root tangles and silt buildup that basically turned a section into a mini swamp. If you’re in a wetter climate, it’s worth double-checking those seams every year or so.

As for weeds sneaking in—yep, they’re like little ninjas. I usually do a walkover at the end of summer and again in spring. Found a dandelion growing right through a seam last year... still not sure how it managed that. Just goes to show, even with all the barriers in place, nature finds a way.

Metal barriers really are a double-edged sword. I’ve had a similar experience—mine started rusting from the inside out after a decade, just where the slope was off and water would sit for days. I thought I’d gotten clever with “maintenance-free” materials, but turns out, nothing’s immune to a persistent puddle. And those sharp flakes? Had to patch up a pair of work gloves after one memorable encounter... lesson learned.

You nailed it with the root tangles too. The first time I dug up what looked like a mutant carrot wedged into a seam, I realized weeds don’t read the rulebook. Even with all our planning, nature’s got tricks up its sleeve. Still, keeping an eye on those seams and drainage points seems to buy a few more years before things get wild. If nothing else, it keeps you humble—and gives you stories to tell when someone asks why your garden gloves look like Swiss cheese.
